How to get your team to DO the work!

Welcome to 2021! I hope you had a relaxing holiday season. I certainly did.

I have a challenge for you for 2021.

GET OUT OF THE WEEDS!

Far too many of the leaders that I work with are spending way too much time doing work that their direct reports are paid to do.

But you may be saying to yourself.

If I decide to focus on more strategic work… how can I ensure sure that my team is properly doing the work that I delegate to them?

I’ll boil it down for you.

You need to focus on three key areas:

  1. Clarify your expectations. Clearly identify what works needs to be done and when it is due. Sit down with each direct report and identify all the tasks that are key requirements for their role.
  2. Follow up and coach. It’s not enough just to delegate the work. You also need to monitor their progress, provide feedback and ask them where they need help. Being available and approachable for your team is critical.
  3. Create high trust relationships. Treat your direct reports like they are your clients. This means your relationship with them is based on support, mutual respect and open communication.

Please don’t assume that your people know WHAT to do or HOW to do the work.

It’s your job to clarify what needs to be done.

If they are not providing you with quality work, identify where they need help.

Review their tasks with them.

Follow up.

Coach.

This is your job as a leader.

Yes, this requires an investment of you time…when you are likely super busy.

But just think, if you start delegating and developing your team PROPERLY NOW…by July you’ll be out of the weeds and focussing on more strategic work!
