How to Build More Human Connections at Work

Diverse group of five colleagues laughing and collaborating in office space, with text "Imagine working in a place where people are intentional about lifting each other up, noticing each other's needs and are connecting on a human level."

I was walking in my neighborhood, listening to a podcast, when I ran into my friend’s 14-year-old son.

“Hi Vanessa,” he said, “Why don’t you go to my house and get my mom to walk with you? She’s had a tough day, and I’m sure she’d love to see a friend right now.”

So, I did.

I called my friend and told her what her son had said. We ended up going on a lovely walk together.

We debriefed about our day, shared some laughs, and had a terrific time together.

It was one of those simple moments that felt good for the soul.

The Power of Emotional Intelligence

Looking back, I was blown away by the emotional intelligence and open-heartedness of this 14-year-old.

He just instinctively knew his mom needed cheering up and that a friend would be the perfect way to do it.

This boy has always been popular, but not because he’s the smartest or funniest kid on the block (although he is both of those things), but because he is so open-hearted.

He has this remarkable way of making people feel special in his presence.

Bringing Open-Heartedness to the Workplace

It got me thinking… what if more adults were open-hearted!

What if our workplaces were filled with people who were thoughtful enough to go out of their way to brighten someone’s day, notice when someone is struggling, or offer to help without being asked?

Three Ways to Create More Human Connections at Work

So, in that vein, here are three ways you can bring this kid’s spirit of open-heartedness into your workplace:

1. Notice and acknowledge others.

Take a moment to check in with your colleagues. A simple “How’s your day going?” or “I noticed you’ve been working hard on that project” can make a big difference.

2. Offer small acts of kindness.

Being open-hearted doesn’t have to be grand. Grab someone a coffee, leave a supportive note, or offer to help with a task. Little gestures matter.

3. Be fully present.

When someone talks to you, really listen. Put away distractions, make eye contact, and respond with empathy. Your presence is one of the most generous things you can give.

The Impact of Open-Hearted Leadership

Imagine a workplace where this kind of energy is the norm.

Imagine working in a place where people are intentional about lifting each other up, noticing each other’s needs, and connecting on a human level.

You might just find that work feels a lot more joyful, collaborative, and… well, just more pleasant!

What can you do to bring more open-hearted moments to your office or team?
