How to prioritize as a leader

Welcome to week 10 of my 3-month series called:

TAKE YOUR LEADERSHIP TO THE NEXT LEVEL: Learn the 3-pillars of leadership success.

In October, we are exploring pillar 3: Lead Your Business.

Today we are going to discuss the importance of prioritization.

I recently did an informal survey with a group of leaders.

I asked them to identify their biggest time management issue from this list:

  • Goal setting
  • Prioritization
  • Managing interruptions
  • Procrastination
  • Scheduling

Which is your biggest challenge?

For this group of leaders, it was prioritization.

There were 20 leaders in the workshop, and 50% of these individuals struggled to prioritize.

The result of this survey concerned me!

It means that half of the leaders in the group were not spending their time on the right things. Leadership priorities, prioritization

I asked these leaders why prioritization was an issue.

They told me that they don’t focus on their priorities because:

  1. Their organization has gone through so much change that their priorities are now unclear.
  2. Their manager does not meet with them very much, so they do not discuss their priorities.
  3. They are either putting out fires all day or spending all day in meetings and have no time left to focus on their priorities.

Sound familiar?

In a world where we are all so busy, it is critically important that you are clear on your top priorities.

Time is a scarce commodity.

So, what do you need to do to focus on what matters to your team and your business?

  • Do you need to delegate more?
  • Do you need to clarify your priorities with your leader?
  • Do you need to say “no” to all those meetings (especially the ones without an agenda) that are an ineffective use of your time?

Just because you are busy doesn’t mean that you are productive.

Spend a few minutes each day to plan to prioritize the tasks and activities that drive value for you and your team.
