Leadership Lessons From a Power Outage at a Dinner Party

candlelit dinner party table settingWhat would you do in this scenario?

Let me explain.

Last weekend, I hosted a dinner party for 18 people.

Three days before the event, I planned the menu and started buying the food. Then several hours before everyone arrived, I set the table, put out the appetizers and we started cooking the meal.

The guests were coming at 7 pm. By 6 pm, I was exhausted! So, I decided to have a quick power nap before my guests arrived. Literally the minute my head hit the pillow, I heard my son say to my husband, “Hey dad, I think the power is out.”

I didn’t know if I should cry, laugh or just go back to bed!!

I had literally spent all week preparing for this dinner party and had 36 chicken breasts ready to go!!!

Then the guests started texting me. “I heard the power is out in the neighbourhood. Should we still come over?”

So, what would you do?

Well, after all the preparation, there was NO WAY I was cancelling this party!

I told all my guests to bring flashlights!

I went through every cupboard in the house and put candles all over the place. I have to say, when the guests arrived, it looked very romantic!

As the night unfolded, I realized this wasn’t just a hosting story! This was also a leadership lesson wrapped in 36 cooked chicken breasts and a slightly chaotic kitchen!

Here are three leadership reminders that hit me somewhere between lighting candle number twelve and explaining to guests why they should not open the fridge unless it was an emergency.

Leadership quote about mindset preparation and constraints turning challenges into magic with team hands stacked together

1. Mindset Drives Momentum

When things go sideways, leaders set the emotional thermostat for everyone else.

  • Your reaction determines whether people freeze or move forward
  • Solutions start the moment you shift from “Why is this happening?” to “What can we do next?”
  • Calm, resourceful energy spreads faster than panic ever will

2. Preparation Matters

Preparation doesn’t stop problems; it gives you the confidence and flexibility to handle them.

  • Strong groundwork creates stability when plans fall apart
  • Preparation gives you options instead of overwhelm
  • The better the preparation, the faster the pivot

3. Constraints Often Create Unexpected Magic

Limitations don’t just create challenges; they often create breakthroughs.

  • Constraints force creativity and fresh thinking
  • Shared challenges build stronger connection and collaboration
  • The moments that don’t go according to plan are often the ones people remember most

So yes, the lights went out, but the party went on!  The night ended up better than I could have planned. In fact, when the lights came back on at 8:30 pm, everyone yelled, “Turn the lights off. We love the candles.”

Leadership works the same way! Your mindset, preparation and embracing constraints can turn unexpected challenges into moments of magic.

Sometimes, the best results happen when things don’t necessarily go according to the plan!
