How to manage a team with diverse work styles

I took an informal poll with my clients asking them how they felt about their current work environment. Let me tell you, the responses were all over the map!

After thinking this over, I realized that a lot of it comes down to whether someone is an introvert or an extrovert.

Introverts get their energy from themselves, so they prefer less time in meetings and more time thinking and working on their own.

Extroverts, however, get their energy from working with others. This means that collaborating with others and being in a busy work environment is motivating.

Whether your team members are introverts, extroverts, or somewhere in between, they all bring something unique to the table. As a leader, you want to keep both work-styles happy and productive. So, how can you make that happen?

First up, the extroverts. They are integral for creating high energy on your team! They are:

  • Strong communicators – Include them in brainstorming sessions and give them an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas on key business issues.
  • Sociable and outgoing – Ensure you provide opportunities for in-person connection and team-building events.
  • Productive in fast-paced bustling environments – Leverage this strength, especially during change.
  • Able to form strong relationships – Allow them to shine in social situations. They can help with team bonding and create an open, collaborative team environment.

Introverts might not be doing cartwheels about busy office days, but their strengths are just as crucial. Introverts are:

  • Independent problem-solvers – Give them time to respond. They often prefer email communication to respond to questions rather than on-the-spot communication.
  • Deep thinkers who will give you well-processed responses – Leverage this strength when planning or creating implementation plans to move your strategy forward.
  • One-on-one insight sharers – Set up one-on-one time as they might not be comfortable sharing their views in large groups.
  • Analytical minds who thrive in quieter spaces – Carve out quiet time for them to work, think and respond to team issues.

Whether your team members are introverts, extroverts, or somewhere in between, they all bring something unique to the table. That’s the beauty of a diverse team!

There are no work-styles that are good or bad, right or wrong. We are all different. Different is exactly what you need for a balanced and effective team.

So, as you navigate the different work-styles on your team, keep these differences in mind. Play to everyone’s strengths, be flexible, and watch your team thrive!
