How to stop doing your team’s job and start leading
Too many leaders get bogged down in the details or distracted by minor issues.
Sound familiar?
If so, I have a challenge for you:
GET OUT OF THE WEEDS!
Too many of you are spending your precious time doing work that your team is perfectly capable of handling.
And, if we’re being honest, it’s not the work you’re there to do in the first place!
Now, I can almost hear you thinking, “But Vanessa, if I focus on the big picture work, how do I make sure my team doesn’t drop the ball?”
Great question! It comes down to three key areas:
- Clarify your expectations: Sit down with each team member and identify what the task is and when it needs to be done.
- Follow up and coach: Delegation isn’t a “set it and forget it” deal. Check in on their progress, offer feedback, and ask where they need help. Be there for your team!
- Build high-trust relationships: Treat your team like your clients. Show respect, keep communication open, and support them like you would a VIP.
Unfortunately, you can’t assume that your people know WHAT to do or HOW to do it. That’s where you come in as their leader!
If the work’s not up to par, figure out where they’re struggling and help them level up.
Review tasks, follow up, and coach. That’s what makes a great leader.
Invest the time now to delegate and develop your team properly, and before you know it, you’ll be out of the weeds and tackling those big strategic projects.
