3 steps to take to be more strategic

My client John is struggling.
He is feeling overwhelmed.
I asked him, “What is the one thing that is making you feel overwhelmed at work?”

He told me that he is running on empty all of the time.

He feels like he is constantly in meetings and putting out fires.

John knows that he has strategic goals to achieve but he feels stressed out just thinking about these goals.

The more he thinks about them, the more he avoids doing them and hence the more he feels overwhelmed.

John feels like he is trapped in a vicious cycle of overwhelm and busy-ness!

This feeling is very common for leaders.

In fact, I delivered a workshop for a group of leaders last week. I asked the audience “Put up your hand if thinking about your current goals makes you feel overwhelmed?”

At least 80% of the people in that room raised their hands.

This is not good.

But this feeling of overwhelm can be avoided.

All it takes is some planning.

The more planning you do, the more your overwhelm will decrease and your results will increase.

So, here are three steps that you can take to plan more, be more strategic, and deliver great results:

  1. Take a step back. You need to identify the results that you want to achieve. Take a minute to write a list of your top three goals this quarter.
  2. Break down your goals. Once you establish your goals, break them down into smaller steps. Don’t get overwhelmed by your large goals. Simply tackle them one step at a time.
  3. Delegate. You won’t be able to accomplish your key goals by yourself. Figure out which pieces of each goal you need to accomplish yourself and which tasks you can delegate. Find the right person to do each task and then follow up with them to hold them accountable.

John followed these three steps and his world changed.

He no longer feels overwhelmed.

What do you need to do to move from overwhelmed to organized and in control?
