9 Critical Team Management Skills Every Leader Needs to Know

There’s something I see all the time with my coaching clients.
They get promoted because they’re great at their job. They’re experts in their field. They deliver results.
Then they become a leader and suddenly… they’re expected to manage people, but nobody ever taught them how.
I’ve been working with leaders for over 20 years, and this is one of the most common challenges that I see.
You’re expected to figure out how to lead a high-performing team on your own, through trial and error.
Team management is a skill set. And like any skill set, it can be learned and developed.
Why Team Management Matters More Than Ever
Managing a team today is more complex than it’s ever been.
You’re dealing with hybrid work, different generations, varying work styles, and constant change.
If you don’t develop strong team management skills, you can start feeling overwhelmed. This is because you probably were never taught how to develop your people, delegate properly, or manage poor performance.
So, let’s start with an honest assessment.
Below is a checklist of the most important team management skills that I developed when writing my book. Take a few minutes to go through it and be honest with yourself.
Put a check mark beside the areas where you’re doing well. Leave the others blank. Those are your development opportunities.
Team Management Skills Assessment
□ I make time to coach my team regularly
□ I have a clear process for developing people’s skills and abilities
□ I give positive feedback regularly and effectively
□ I address poor performance quickly with constructive feedback
□ I adapt my communication style to meet different team members’ needs
□ I know how to build and maintain a high-performing, engaged team
□ I run productive team meetings that people actually find valuable
□ I create an environment of trust, respect, and open communication
□ I manage conflict proactively before it escalates
Your Team Management Assessment Results
So, how did you do? Take a look at your assessment results. What patterns do you notice?
If you checked most of these boxes, great, but most leaders will likely find several gaps.
That’s okay! As leaders, we are constantly evolving and improving.
Developing these skills is critically important to the success of your team or business because each gap has consequences:
- If you don’t coach your team, they won’t develop autonomy or motivation.
- If you can’t give effective feedback, performance issues will fester and grow.
- If you don’t create trust, your team will disengage, and productivity will drop.
The Good News
The good news is that these skills can be developed. I’ve spent two decades teaching leaders exactly how to do this, and I’ve watched them transform their teams.
They get promoted faster because they’re seen as capable leaders.
They feel more confident and in control of their work.
They achieve results they didn’t think were possible.
