How to Get Results When You Don’t Have Authority

I created a new course.
Let me share the why first, and then I’ll share the what.
Lately, I’ve noticed that so many leaders are struggling to get their work completed on time.
And honestly, it’s not their fault.
Why Getting Work Done Has Never Felt Harder
They are waiting for other people.
The reality is that none of us works in a vacuum. Almost everything we do depends on collaboration. We need input, support, decisions or action from others in order to move our work forward.
But lately, it feels like that has become harder than ever.
Do you agree?
Everyone is busy. Everyone has competing priorities, and as one of my clients, Natalie said to me:
“Your urgency is not my urgency.”
I wrote that line down immediately because it is so true.
Leaders, team leads and project managers are increasingly struggling to rely on colleagues to meet deadlines and deliver work on time.
After hearing this same frustration again and again, I started asking myself:
How do people get results when they don’t have direct authority?
The answer is influence.
In a recent Harvard Business Review study, they said that “Leadership is less about positional power and more about relational power including credibility, trust and alignment.”
I couldn’t agree more!
Introducing: Getting Results Without Authority
So, based on this current reality, I created a new course called Getting Results Without Authority.
The course is built around what I call “The Influence Triangle,” and includes three key areas that help people build influence and get things done:
- Credibility – How do you build high-trust, respectful relationships?
- Understanding Others – How do you understand what truly matters to the people you need to influence?
- Strategic Communication – How do you tailor your message so others are more likely to listen, engage and take action?
Influence Is a Skill You Can Learn
At the end of the day, your success does not just depend on how good you are at your job. It also depends on your ability to influence others, build support and move work forward through people.
The good news is that this is a skill you can learn.
If this is something you or your team are struggling with, I’d be happy to help.
Feel free to reach out if you’d like to learn more about the course or simply have a conversation about the challenges you are facing and how you can dial up your influence.
