How to set goals that drive success and build skills
It’s the time of year when I’m having many conversations with my clients about setting goals.
While some of my client’s organizations are very goal-oriented, many of the leaders that I work with have never been taught how to set goals properly.
In fact, last week, I had a conversation with a leader about the difference between strategic goals and development goals.
He was not aware that there are different types of goals to be set.
So, I thought, if he required clarification on the two types of goals, maybe you do too!
Let’s talk about both strategic and development goals.
What are they? How are they different?
Here is the chart that I shared with my client, which provides a great summary:
Balancing strategic and development goals will ensure that your team members not only hit their short-term goals but also build their capacity for the future.
Your strategic goals will drive your team and your organization forward.
Your development goals will empower you to confidently meet your challenges and build the right skills for your current role.
By understanding these two types of goals and working collaboratively with your team to set them, you will create both clarity and alignment across your team.
Start by setting your strategic goals first.
Once those have been created, look at the skills gaps each person needs to close to achieve those goals.
You can then create their development goals to close those gaps.
As you can see, the two types of goals are set separately but work hand in hand to ensure your success!
So, as we wrap up this year, take some time over the next few weeks to set your goals for next year!
I did my goal setting last week and now I am super excited to start the new year with focus and clarity!
